  • 7.- What do you feed your dogs, do you give any supplements?
  • 8.- What do you feel is your biggest responsibility to the breed?
  • 9.- With your years of experience, what words of advice do you have for the novice?
  • 10.- What future goals have you set for yourself?
  • My mother started showing, training and breeding shelties the year I was born. So I was literally born into it. I started training in obeidence and showing in junior showmanship when I was 7. I have always been involved in the breed even when I was a kid. As I got older I learned as much as I could and started doing my own breedings.
  • Im now 27 so have been in them for as long as I can remember. I have had other breeds before (Many CH. Borzoi, Multi CH & performance titled Belgian malinois, tried yorkies for a small while and had a CH. german shorthaired pointer) and none of them compare to the sheltie. Their intelligence, versitiy and nature of this breed is just beyond compare. Not to mention their beauty. Guess I truely am all about shelties.
  • Some of my foundation stock like Storybook Grandslam CDX, CGC, TDI, RAE came from my mother I then took her and bred her to the best studs I could fine. One breeding in particular should be noted. When I bred her to CH. Mac-Nel Gold Chip before he was even a champion never the less a top 10 dog in the nation I knew I was going to get some beautiful pups. One of these pups Mac-nel Golden riches I sold back to the stud owner and she is now co-owned with Judy and should get her ROM shortly. Billie Adams has been extemely important to my breeding program, many of mine are either from her boys, from her directly or where co-owned/co-bred with her. We are also lifelong friends and she has been a mentor to me. I just kept looking and talking to people until I found the right breeder to get some foundation dog's from.
  • My AOAC lines most influental bitch would be INT. CH. Belmar N Lakewood's Xena (Nat Pts) which when Billie and I bred her to AM/CAN CH. Dury Voe Wintergreen gave me my other best producing bitch Lakewood AshLaur Winter Ice. On my sable side most of my dog's go back to CH. Lakewood's Postmark and CH. Lakewood's Pretty boy Floyd so both these boys need to be noted.
  • Size is always an issue in this breed. Other than that missing teeth has been another problem and something I was not aware of for awhile because most people were not forthcoming with the importance of it. I know only keep and breed to dogs that do have all of their teeth. Another issue has been finding the right amount of dogs to have without putting your entire breeding program at risk. Since the majority of the time you don't know for sure until a dog is 2-3 yrs old rather he/she is going to work out (genetic testing, turned out as planned and reproduction). But you have to be resonable about how many you have so they get the attention and such they deserve. Think I have finally found a good number and plan to stick to it.
  • I have about an acre that is complelty fenced so they get plenty of excercise, I own a grooming shop so their grooming stays up to date. I keep my dogs at ideal weights and give as much socilization and training as possible.
  • Purina. Yes, wheat germ oil and bone meal. Puppies and mothers are also are given calicum.
  • To keep my dog's termpermentally, genentically and conformationally correct and stable. To breed the best dogs that I possible can and get as close to the breed standard as possible. And to insure the puppies/dogs are placed with responsible loving owners and that the new owners have excellent lifetime companions. My main goal is to breed to improve the breed.
  • Be willing to put a lot of time, money and work into showing and breeding dog's if you want to succeed at it and do it responsibly. Take note that actual good show breeders are lucky to break even never the less make a profit. We do this because we love the breed and want to improve it not for the money. Take your time finding the right dog and the right breeder to get your foundation from not all breeders and dog's are created equal and it is very heat breaking to see all of your money, time, hopes and dreams not work out as planned.
  • I would like to eventually start judging either obedience and or conformation. More immeditate goals: more championships in AKC, UKC, INT & Can. And a bunch more rally, obedience titles and would like to start putting tracking, herding and agility titles on my dog's as well.
Description

AshLaur Shelties is located in Charleston, WV.  We breed all colors of shelties and sell pet/performance quality puppies and show/breeding quality puppies.  We occassionally have older puppies/young adults and older adults being retired from being bred and or shown for sale.  While we prefer for our puppies to be picked up in person shipping if needed is avaiable at buer's expense (not included in the price of the puppy). We offer Champion stud service to approved girls.

I sell both pet and show quality puppies. Pet/Performance quality puppies are usually $800 each and sold as pets only and on strict spay/neuter contracts.  I require that they be fixed before they are 8 months old and do require that proof of them being fixed as agreed be sent to me for my records (a copy of the bill from the vet is all I need). Show/breeding quality puppies start at $1,600 each and usually have additional terms.  I typically require 2 puppies back on females-bred to an approved male and 2 stud rights back to me on males.  They are sold on co-ownerships until terms are completed.  I also do require that show puppies are shown and every attempt within reason is made by the owner for the puppy to finish his/her championship.  Genetic testing on dog's sold as show/breeding does have to be completed before they are bred. I guarantee my show puppies against any disqualifing faults for the show ring.  Only puppies I will sell as show/breeding quality thus with full breeding rights are ones that I have considered keeping myself. I am very picky about who I will sell as show quailty and will not sell just anyone as so.  It is not possible to buy a pet quality puppy with breeding rights. Older puppies/young adults and adults being retired from being shown and bred vary in price which is determined by the age, individual dog and if the dog is being sold as a pet or show/breeding.

All puppies are AKC Reg, have Champion lines and most are also Champion sired. Puppies are home raised and extremely well socalized. My puppies are up to date on all shots, wormings, dewclaws removed and microchipped before they go.  All of my puppies are well socialized, used to being handled, groomed and are good with dogs, cats and puppies.  I also personally test the temperments of my puppies to help better match them with their new owners. The earliest I let my puppies go to their new homes is when they are 8-9 weeks old. They come with a 72 health guarantee and a 3 year genetic guarantee.   All of my dog's are house dogs I do not have outside kennels period.  So all of my puppies are raised in the house and are used to a family environment.

We are members of the White Shetland Sheepdog Association, United Shetland Sheepdog Association, K.O.T.C, and founding members of the West Virginia Shetland Sheepdog Association. We have put many CGC Titles, TDI Titles, Obedience titles and rally titles on our dogs.  Furthermore we show in International, AKC, and UKC Conformation and have put many championships on our dogs.  We have one of the first puppies in the country to get a puppy S.T.A.R title.  We are also getting into Agility, tracking and herding and hope to show in these venues soon.
